Build a stable starting setup
A tripod prevents hand movement during multi-second exposures. Use a lens that can open wide, disable unnecessary stabilisation when firmly mounted if the manufacturer recommends it, and use a timer or remote release to avoid touching the camera at exposure start.
Shoot raw files when available so that white balance and shadow detail remain flexible. Keep a dim red light for controls and avoid shining a bright torch toward other observers.
Focus before the display intensifies
Autofocus often struggles on a dark sky. Magnify a bright star or distant light in live view, focus manually until it is smallest, and check again after moving or changing zoom. A piece of removable tape can help protect the focus ring without marking equipment.
Infinity markings are only a starting point. Temperature changes can shift focus, and foreground subjects may require a separate frame or a compromise focus distance.
Match shutter speed to movement
A faint, slow arc may tolerate a longer exposure that collects more light. Fast curtains and rays need a shorter shutter speed to preserve structure. There is no universal setting: review the histogram and fine detail, then shorten the exposure as movement accelerates.
A wide aperture gathers more light but may soften corners or reduce foreground depth of field. ISO amplifies the recorded signal and noise; raise it only as needed after choosing the aperture and motion-preserving shutter speed.
Protect colour and highlights
Aurora brightness can change rapidly, so check that the green channel and bright structures are not clipped. Camera auto white balance may vary between frames; a consistent manual value provides an easier editing baseline, while raw capture preserves later adjustment.
Photographs often show more colour than eyesight because the sensor integrates light. Edit to clarify the scene without claiming that a long exposure exactly reproduces human perception.
Work safely in a cold, dark place
Carry charged spare batteries close to your body because cold reduces performance. Use warm layers, footwear appropriate to ice, and a headlamp. Scout the site in daylight, confirm legal access and protect fragile ground.
Never stop in a traffic lane or stand on a road for a photograph. Watch weather warnings, tides, avalanche or cliff hazards where relevant, and tell someone your plan in remote terrain. No photograph is worth unsafe access.
